The Norwegian mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland studied at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo. The season 2001/02 she was engaged as soloist at the Staatsoper Hannover.
She regularly works with conductors such as Shalev Ad-El, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Giancarlo Andretta, Fabio Biondi, Fabio Bonizzoni, Frans Brüggen, Pierre Cao, Aaron Edward Carpenè, Harry Christophers, Christophe Coin, Thomas Dausgaard, Gottfried von der Goltz, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, Philippe Herreweghe, Manfred Honeck, Robert King, Nicholas Kraemer, Andrew Manze, Michael McCarthy, Emilio Moreno, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Philip Picket, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Ari Rasilainen, Daniel Reuss, Joshua Rifkin, Helmut Rilling, Mats Rondin, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Federico Maria Sardelli, Jordi Savall, Etienne Siebens, Andreas Spering, Christoph Spering, Philipp von Steinaecker, Masaaki Suzuki, Thomas Søndergård, Robin Ticciati, Jos van Immerseel, Bruno Weil and Michael Willens.
Marianne Beate Kielland is a much noted concert singer and she regularly appears in major concert halls and at festivals throughout Europe and Japan. She has built an unusually vast concert repertoire that spans music from the early 17th Century works of Monteverdi, via Bach, Händel, Vivaldi, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Berlioz, Dvorak, Elgar, Mahler, Schönberg, Berg, Weill, Berio, up to contemporary works of Cage, Stockhausen, Ratkje and Plagge.
Recent appearances with operatic roles on stage and in concerts include Messaggiera and Proserpina in Monteverdi’s L'Orfeo, the title role in Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans, Hamor in Handel’s Jephta, Ercole in Caldara’s Il piu bel nome and Adalgiso in Scarlatti’s Carlo, Re d’Alemagna.
She has made more than 20 CD recordings of oratorios, operas, cantatas and “Lieder” by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Caldara, Scarlatti, Beethoven, Schumann, Mussorgsky, Martin, Chausson, Korngold, von Suppé and Sigurd Islandsmoen.
Engagements in 2009 included Aronne in Francesco Nicolò Fago’s Il Faraone Sommerso in Spain, Italy, Austria and Poland, Bach’s Cantata BWV 45 in Leipzig, 2nd. Harlot in Handel’s Solomon in Madrid, Handel’s Messiah in Bergen as well as in Trondheim, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in Aix en Provence as well as in La Chaise Dieu, Ercole in Caldara’s Il piu bel nome in Spain, Elgar’s Sea pictures in several concert halls in Norway, Bach’s St. Mark Passion and Magnificat in Vestfold, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater in Tromso, and a recording of Frank Martin’s Golgotha.
Engagements in 2010 included Bach’s Mass in B minor in Madrid and Barcelona, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in Amsterdam, Brussels and Antwerp, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in Toblach, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri in Stuttgart as well as in Tallinn, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in Tokyo, Monteverdi’s Combattimento di Tancredi in Amsterdam and Bruges, Mozart’s Requiem in Gothenburg, Ravel’s Chanson Madecasse in Prösels, Handel’s Armida Abbandonata in Metten, Hamar and Kristiansand, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis as well as Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater in Oslo, Berio’s Folk Songs in Trondheim, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle in Hamar, a recital at the Norwegian National Opera, Her recordings in 2010 included of solo cantatas for alto by Handel, Moneverdi’s Combattimento di Tancredi, and Grieg/Thommesen’s Veslemøy Synsk.
Assignments in 2011 included Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder and Berio’s Folk Songs in Bodoe, Mahler’s Rückert Lieder in Tel Aviv, Couperin’s Leçons de ténèbres in London, The Hague, Bruges and Zaragoza, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in Oslo as well as in Bergen, Fernando in Attilio Ariosti’s La Fede nei tradimenti in Siena and Montpellier, Mozart’s Requiem in Chaise Dieu, Mozart’s Mass in c minor in Vezelay, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in Oslo, Handel’s Messiah in Washington, Aarhus and in Trondheim, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in Oslo and Trondheim, Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri in Oslo and a recital with music by Webern and Schönberg in Bergen.
