The young Norwegian mezzo-soprano Tuva Semmingsen studied at the Norwegian State Academy of Music and the Royal Opera Academy in Copenhagen. She made a highly successful debut at the Royal Danish Opera as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro and she has since then established herself as one of Scandinavia’s most exciting singers.
She is a member of the soloist ensemble at the Royal Danish Opera where her roles include Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Angelina in La Cenerentola, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Stéphano in Roméo et Juliette, Sesto in Giulio Cesare, Rosmira Partenope, Minerva and Melanto in Il Ritorno d'Ulisse and Nerone in L'Incoronazione di Poppea.
Recent guest appearances have included Idamante in Idomeneo in Paris, Lyon and New York, Sesto in Giulio Cesare in Lille, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro at Teatro la Fenice in Venice, Nerone in Handel’s Agrippina at Theater and der Wien as well as in La Coruña, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Opéra de Nancy and at the Grand Théâtre Reims, Dorisbe in Scarlatti’s Tolomeo e Alessandro at Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris and at Theater an der Wien, Feodor in Boris Godunov for the Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos, Angelina in La Cenerentola with Glyndebourne Touring Opera as well as at the Royal Swedish Opera, the title role in Vivaldi’s Ottone in villa at Teatro Olimpico Vicenza, title role in Niccolo Jommelli’s Ezio in Santiago de Compostela, Rosmira in Handel’s Partenope in Royal Albert Hall in London, Melanto and Amore in Il Ritorno d'Ulisse at the Drottningholm Festival in Stockholm, Doralice in Rossini’s La gazzetta for Garsington Opera, and Sesto in Giulio Cesare and Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Norwegian National Opera.
Tuva Semmingsen is a much sought after concert singer. She frequently appears at festivals and concert venues throughout Europe. She has worked with conductors such as Rinaldo Alessandrini, Giancarlo Andretta, Fabio Biondi, William Christie, Alan Curtis, Thomas Dausgaard, Peter Feranc, Federico Guglielmo, Emmanuelle Haïm, Christopher Hogwood, Robert King, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Paolo Olmi, Philip Pickett, Andreas Spering, Mark Tatlow and Mario Venzago.
Upcoming engagements include Medoro in Vivaldi’s Orlando furioso at Opéra de Nancy, the title role in Handel’s Serse, Dorabella in Così fan tutte and Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Royal Danish Opera, and concerts of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella in Alice Tully Hall, New York with the conductor Michael Schønwandt.
Her recordings include Vivaldi’s Sum in Medio and Gloria e Imeneo with The King’s Consort, the title role in Vivaldi’s Ottone in villa and Sesto in Giulio Cesare as well as Rosmira in Handel’s Partenope on DVD.
