The young Norwegian soprano Berit Norbakken Solset studied at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo and at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik.
In May 2006 she was one of the winners of the competition INTRO-classic at Bergen International Festival.
Berit Norbakken Solset is one of Norway’s most sought after concert singers. She has built a considerable repertoire, spanning from renaissance and baroque music to contemporary music. She regularly works with the leading Norwegian orchestras and festivals. She has also worked with international conductors such as Olof Boman, Andrew Parrott, Andrew Wilder and Michael Willens.
She made her opera debut as Woodmaiden in Henrik Hellstenius’ opera Ophelia - death by water singing. Other opera appearances have included Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Abel in Scarlatti's Il primo omicidio and Georg Friedrich Haas’ Melancholia.
Engagements in the 2011/12 season included Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with the Arctic Opera, Bach’s cantata Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis and Roman’s Funeral Music for Ferderik I with the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin and the conductor Olof Boman, Bruckner’s Mass in F minor with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the conductor Simon Gaudenz, Mozart’s Requiem with Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and the conductor Stefan Parkman as well as in Oslo with the conductor Per Kristian Amundrod, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung in Oslo as well as in Tromsoe with the conductor Herbert Böck, Handel’s Messiah at the Kirsten Flagstad Festival, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio as well as Magnificat in Sandefjord, Haydn’s Arianna a Naxos in Nordfjord, the world premiere of Ragnar Rasmussen’s Malleus Maleficarum in Berlevaag, Bach’s Actus Tragicus in Tromsoe, Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater in Trondheim, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummernight's Dream in Tromsoe, Cantatas by Bach in Harstad, a series of concerts of Schumann’s Frauenliebe und Leben with the pianist Sveinung Bjelland, and a recital with songs by Brahms and Strauss in Gloppen.
Engagements in the 2012/13 season has so far included Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro with the Arctic Opera, arias by Handel and others with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Schubert's Mass no. 2 in G major at Oslo Chamber Music Festival, Bach's Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen at the Nordland Music Festival, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in Bodoe, and Handel’s Messiah in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Halden, Hemne and in Rana.
