The Norwegian tenor Magnus Staveland was born in Stavanger. He studied at the State Academy of Music in Oslo, and at the Royal Opera Academy in Copenhagen with Susanna Eken. He graduated in the summer of 2008. Magnus Staveland has quickly gained reputation as one of Scandinavia’s most interesting up-and-coming singers.

 

Opera engagements have included Gluck’s one act operas Aristeo and Bauci e Filemone at Opéra Garnier Paris, Opéra du Rhin Strasbourg, Palais des Beaux-Arts Brussels, Opéra Garnier Monaco and Le Corum Montpellier, Enea in Cavalli's La Didone at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia and at Teatro Regio di Torino, Medoro in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino at the Staatsoper Berlin and at the Innsbrucker Festwochen der alten Musik, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence as well as at the Norwegian National Opera, Natura and Pane in Cavalli’s La Calisto at Théâtre de La Monnaie Brussels, Aret in Haydn’s Philemon und Baucis in Madrid, Siena and Potsdam, Lucano, Soldati 1 and Famigliari 2 in L'Incoronazione di Poppea at the Royal Danish Opera as well as at the Norwegian National Opera, Pierrot Lunaire in Stavanger, and Arne Nordheim’s Aurora in Oslo.

 

He regularly works with conductors such as Rinaldo Alessandrini, Fabio Biondi, Gary Cooper, Simon Carrington, Alessandro De Marchi, Eric Ericsson, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, René Jacobs, Nicholas Kraemer, Cristoph Kühlwein, Andrew Manze, Juan Bautista Otero, Andrew Parrot, Christophe Rousset, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Federico Maria Sardelli, Marc Soustrot, Mark Tatlow and Ottaviano Tenerani.

 

His concert repertoire include Bach’s St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, Mass in B minor, Christmas Oratorio and a number of Cantatas, Handel’s Messiah, Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno and La Resurrezione, Mozart’s Requiem, Mass in C minor and Coronation Mass, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung and Paukenmesse, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Missa Solemnis, Caldara’s Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo, Telemann’s Brockes Passion, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Monteverdi’s Marienvespers.

 

Engagements in 2010 included Purcell’s King Arthur in Paris and Toulouse, Martín y Soler’s Il Sogno and La Dora Festeggiante in Barcelona, Lucano, Soldato 1 and Famigliari 2 in L'Incoronazione di Poppea at the Norwegian National Opera, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in Kristiansand, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Bach’s St. John Passion and Bach’s Mass in B minor; all in Oslo, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Drottningholm Festival in Stockholm and Ferrando in Così fan tutte in Paris, Brussels and Lisbon. He also recorded Celio in the newly discovered Serenata Germanico by Handel.

 

Assignments in 2011 included Telemaco in II Ritorno d'Ulisse at the Vlaamse Opera Antwerp, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Drottningholm Festival in Stockholm, Medoro in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino in Brussels as well as at the Edinburgh Festival, Catone in Vivaldi’s in Catone in Utica at Theater an der Wien, Polifonte in Vivaldi’s Oracolo in Messenia in Krakow, Bach’s Mass in B minor in Leipzig, Zürich, Cologne and Seoul, arias by Monteverdi in Rennes (France), concerts with arias by Mozart in Norway, a recital with songs by Schubert, Schumann and Britten in Stavanger, Beethoven’s Mass in C major in Oslo, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in Oslo, and Ragnar Söderlind’s Requiem in Oslo, Mozart’s Requiem in Oslo.
