The young Norwegian baritone Halvor F. Melien studied at the State Academy of Music in Oslo.

Opera engagements have included Masetto in Don Giovanni, Moralès in Carmen, Giove in II Ritorno d’Ulisse and Steward / Sergeant / Sentry in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Norwegian National Opera, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at the Municipal Theatre in Ho Chi Minh City, Marcello in La Bohème with the Kristiansund Opera as well as in performance with Vestfold Symphony Orchestra, Leporello in Don Giovanni with Opera East, and Salieri in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri with the Arctic Opera.

Halvor F. Melien is especially sought-after as a concert singer, appearing extensively throughout Europe. His vast repertoire includes oratorios, masses, cantatas and song cycles. He is one of Scandinavia’s leading interpreters of 20th and 21st-century music, having participated in a number of world-premiers.

He has worked with conductors such as Paul Agnew, Oleg Caetani, Aaron Carpene, Alfredo Bernardini, Fabio Biondi, Alessandro De Marchi, Peter Djiikstra, Marcello Di Lisa, Rubén Dubrovsky, Christian Eggen, Thröstur Eiriksson, John Helmer Fiore, Antonino Fogliani, Simon Gaudenz, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, Stephen Higgins, Robert Howarth, Tõnu Kaljuste, Sirkka Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch, Nicholas Kraemer, Andrew Lawrence-King, Gijs Lenaars, Steven Levine, Gergely Madaras, Andrew Parrott, Vasily Petrenko, Sébastien Rouland, Peter Schreier, Morten Schuldt-Jensen, Andreas Spering, Christoph Spering, Henrik Vagn Christensen, Jos van Veldhoven, Alexander Vedernikov, Gottfried von der Goltz, Philipp von Steinaecker, Julian Wachner and Joshua Weilerstein.

The season 2016/17 included Salieri in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri with the Arctic Opera, Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Hamburg as well as in Oslo, Bach’s St John Passion in Essen and Aix en Provence with Musica Saeculorum, Weill’s Die sieben Todsünden with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, concerts with Bergen National Opera, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung in Stavanger, Kristiansand and Toensberg, Mozart’s Mass in C minor with Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem in Moss, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in Drammen, cantatas by Bach in Moss and Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Hamburg. His many engagements in Oslo have included Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Mass in B minor, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and several concerts with cantatas by Bach.

The season 2017/18 has so far included Giove in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria at the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, Peter in Hänsel und Gretel as well as a world premiere of 3 new operas by Mæland, Ahvenniemi and Skoglund with Bergen National Opera, Fauré’s Requiem with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra as well as in Bergen, Haydn’s Nelson Mass with the Slovenian Philharmonics, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in Holland with Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah in Oslo, Halden and Sarpsborg, cantatas by Bach in Kristiansund, music by Bach, Telemann and Graupner in Oslo, and arias and cantatas by J.S. Bach in Oslo and Hamar.

Barytonen Halvor F. Melien studerte ved Norges Musikkhøgskole i Oslo. Sommeren 2014 medvirket han i Académie du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

Til tross for sin unge alder, har han allerede etablert seg som en meget etterspurt konsertsanger, og han opptrer regelmessig i konsertsaler og på festivaler i Europa og Asia. Han har et usedvanlig bredt repertoar som spenner fra 1600-tallsmusikk via Bach, Händel, Haydn, Mozart, Brahms, Bruckner, Grieg, Fauré, Mahler, Duruflé og frem til vår tids musikk.

Han har medvirket på en rekke urfremførelser og CD-innspillinger, blant annet John Frandsens Requiem, Knut Vaages Høgsongen og Ørjan Matres Hoffentlich mussten Sie an der Grenze nicht lange warten.

Han har jobbet med internasjonale dirigenter som Paul Agnew, Fabio Biondi, Marcello Di Lisa, Alessandro De Marchi, Peter Dijkstra, Simon Gaudenz, Robert Howarth, Tõnu Kaljuste, Nicholas Kraemer, Andrew Parrott, Vasily Petrenko, George Petrou, Morten Schuldt-Jensen, Andreas Spering, Jos van Veldhoven, Alexander Vedernikov, Gottfried von der Goltz og Philipp von Steinaecker.

På Den Norske Opera har han sunget roller som Masetto i Don Giovanni, Moralès i Carmen, Giove i II Ritorno d’Ulisse og Sersjant, Gårdskar og Fengselsvakt i Sjostakovitsj’ Lady Macbeth fra Mtsensk. Av andre operaengasjementer kan nevnes Giove i Monteverdis Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria ved Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, Papageno i Mozarts Tryllefløyten ved Municipal Theatre i Ho Chi Minh City, Pastore i Alessandro Scarlattis Erminia i Napoli, Man i Lera Auerbachs The Blind med Trondheim Musikkteater, Salieri i Rimskij-Korsakovs Mozart og Salieri med Nordnorsk Opera og Symfoniorkester, Marcello i La Bohème med Operaen i Kristiansund og Giove i II Ritorno d’Ulisse ved Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik.
