The young Norwegian mezzo-soprano Mari Askvik studied at the Grieg Academy in Bergen, the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and at the Norwegian National Academy of Opera in Oslo.

During her studies she performed roles such as Cherubino in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Rosina in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, Angelina in LA CENERENTOLA, Melide in Cavalli’s L’ORMINDO, Ottone in L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA and Mother in Stravinsky’s MAVRA. She also sang Dorabella in COSI FAN TUTTE at The Norwegian National Opera

Since then she has sung Genia in the monologue opera GENIA by Seppar/Dobewall at Theater Freiburg, Mercédès in CARMEN at the Kristiansund Opera as well as in Sandefjord, with Haugesund Chamber Opera and at Ringsaker Opera, 2. Lady in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE with Opera Østfold, Lola in CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA as well as 2. Witch in DIDO AND AENEAS at Ringsaker Opera.

Mari has also participated in several contemporary opera productions, such as the premieres of Evelin Seppar’s ICARUS in Amsterdam and Øyvind Mæland’s AD UNDAS – SOLARIS CORRECTED at the Norwegian National Opera.

She has quickly become one of Norway’s most sought after mezzos for concerts. With her dark timbre she is ideally suited to a wide range of repertoire.

Her engagements in 2019 include Hänsel in HÄNSEL UND GRETEL in Sandefjord, Charpentier’s LEÇONS DE TÉNÈBRES with the early music ensemble L’État Libre de Neige in Bremen, Mendelsohn’s ELIJAH in Oslo and in Moss, Vivaldi’s GLORIA in Oslo, Bach’s ASCENSION ORATORIO in Oslo, Bach’s B MINOR MASS in Bergen, Bach’s CHRISTMAS ORATORIO in Trondheim, Haydn’s GREAT ORGAN SOLO MASS in Uddevalla, Bach’s ST MATTHEW PASSION in Hokksund and Mozart’s REQUIEM in Ås, Kragerø as well as in Stavanger
